Levon Helm, formerly of The Band, is in the final stages of his long battle with cancer.
A message posted Tuesday on the website of the musician of 71 years old, his family said: "Levon is in the final stages of her battle against cancer."
Helm was diagnosed with throat cancer
Helm was diagnosed with throat cancer in 1998 and illness reduced his voice to a whisper. But he continued to sing on records and playing concerts at his home in Woodstock.
Helm was a key member of the band and lent his distinctive voice for Southern classics like "The Weight" and "Night of Old Dixie Down Drove."
The original band members were included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.
